X-Axis movement

X-Axis movement

The seismic portals, most easily understood as large boxes attached to the hospital structure, are allowed full X and Y axis movement during a quake. The mechanism above allows the portals to slide freely along the hospitals slab edge. In this mock up, the wood serves to represent the hospital edge of slab. As the wood (hospital) moves left and right during an earthquake, the seismic portals move in and out of the fixed building hallway; as the wood (hospital) moves up and down in this photo, the portal stays positioned in the hallway while this x-axis attachment allows the hospital to move the required 30″.
